Indra Pelani was part of a network of people monitoring illegal activities in the forestry and agriculture sector in Indonesia.
His body was found one day after he was taken away by security guards working for Wirakarya Sakti (WKS), a subsidiary of APP (Asia Pulp and Paper – Sinar Mas Group).
His hands and feet had been bound together.
Communities in Indonesia frequently accuse private security firms of violence or other abuses.
Seven people have since handed themselves into police. However, an independent and impartial judicial investigation is needed to bring those responsible to justice and to prevent further abuses against environmental rights activists in Indonesia.
Protecting frontline activists
Justice in this case will not only mean justice for Indra Pelani’s family. It will also send a message that abuses against environmental rights activists in Indonesia will not be accepted.
Across the world, attacks and human rights abuses against environmental and human rights defenders are increasing. Several Friends of the Earth groups or those associated with them have themselves been targeted.
International solidarity works
Writing to the President of Indonesia, the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK and the Indonesian Chief of Police will add to the pressure to take action. It will also demonstrate international awareness of the dangers facing environmental defenders in Indonesia.
Please take action. Join WALHI (Friends of the Earth Indonesia) in calling for justice and for the lives of the defenders of environmental and human rights to be protected.
For technical reasons your emails to the President of Indonesia will be sent via the Indonesian Embassy in the UK.
