Jackdaw gas field set to be approved?
Reacting to reports that the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea is set to be approved, Friends of the Earth’s head of policy, Mike Childs, said:
“Communities across the UK are already paying the price of an accelerating climate crisis through record-breaking heatwaves, wildfires and droughts. And earlier this week, the UN warned that the world will overshoot the critical threshold of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
"Approving Jackdaw would be a staggering step backwards, pumping more climate-wrecking pollution into the atmosphere while doing nothing to make energy bills cheaper. The only winners from allowing new North Sea gas and oil would be the companies and their shareholders - while ordinary people are left to carry the costs.
“If the government is serious about delivering a clean, affordable future, it must stop doubling down on costly fossil fuels and focus instead on energy efficiency, energy storage and developing the UK’s vast renewable potential.”
