About Us

When and Where

We are an active local group fighting social and environmental justice issues in the Merthyr Tydfil and Heads of the Valleys area.

We initially formed during the (ongoing) campaign against the massive Ffos-y-Fran opencast coal mine which still looms over the town of Merthyr Tydfil today.

We then moved on to fight off the ludicrous proposal for a monsterous mass burn incinerator at Cwmbargoed (Brig-y-Cwm). To facilitate this we formed the United Valleys Action Group (UVAG), which is still active today. Through our campaigning we have managed to give visibility of the plight of Merthyr residents and making the operator works with more sensitivity towards the local residents.

Through UVAG we are now part of an active campaign against a new opencast coal mine proposal (Nant Llesg) that would work right up to the doorsteps of the communities of Rhymney, Pontlottyn and Fochriw for the next 15 years.

We carry out positive campaigning as well and have been very active across the area with the Bee Cause. We are also trying to generate interest in private industry and government authorities to create green jobs in the Heads of the Valleys area.
