Save our Lake District - Don't Dump Cumbria

Ruth Balogh from West Cumbria and North Lakes Friends of the Earth has been leading a fierce campaign to save the Lake District from the siting of a nuclear dump in West Cumbria.

Plans for the dump include burying both high and intermediate level nuclear waste - something that hasn't been tried anywhere else in the world.

Friends of the Earth was instrumental in getting similar plans for dumping intermediate level waste in the area halted in 1997.

Campaigners have set up a website and Facebook group to inform people of the proposals and gather statements of opposition.

Local residents are encouraged to write about the issue to their:

  • Councillors
  • MPs
  • MEPs

If you don't live locally, you may be one of the thousands of people who visit Cumbria each year and object to the plans. If so you're encouraged to write to:

  • Your MP
  • Cumbria County Council
  • Lake District Park Authority

Visit the campaign website and show your opposition to these plans.
