Responding to news that Starbucks is to introduce a charge on disposable coffee cups, Julian Kirby, plastic-free campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:

"A small charge is proven to be effective at cutting waste, so this is welcome news, although it would be good to know Starbucks’ plans for shifting to non-plastics alternatives.

“Alternatives do exist – and the in-store collection of disposable cups for recycling is certainly possible.

"We've seen from Friends of the Earth’s popular #PlasticFreeFriday initiative that there is an enormous appetite to stop this waste.

“Starbucks is joining an unstoppable trend to cut unnecessary and damaging plastic.”
