A new national scheme announced today that will enable people to refill water bottles for free in tens of thousands of places in England has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth.

The Drinking Water Refill Initiative will see water companies join forces with the Refill campaign to create a national network of refill points in high street retailers, coffee shops, businesses and local authorities in every major city and town in England by 2021.

Friends of the Earth waste campaigner Julian Kirby said:

“This is a fantastic initiative which will hopefully slash the number of plastic bottles that are needlessly produced each year.

“We need more schemes such as this to tackle scourge of plastic pollution – including the reintroduction of water fountains in our cities, towns and railway stations. The sooner the better.”
