Earth’s climate swings increasingly out of balance - WMO

Press release
The World Meteorological Organization's new report is the latest stock take on the declining health of the planet

23 Mar 2026

Responding to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report published today warning that the Earth’s climate is more out of balance than at any time in observed history, Friends of the Earth’s head of policy, Mike Childs, said:

“This is yet another stark warning that our planet is heating to dangerous levels, putting people and nature at serious risk.

“Our dependence on fossil fuels is driving instability, conflict, soaring energy bills and the climate crisis itself. Millions are already paying the price through devastating heatwaves, floods and storms.

“With carbon dioxide pollution in our atmosphere now at its highest level in at least two million years, the shift from gas and oil to clean energy cannot wait. Politicians who ignore these warnings and call for climate action to be scrapped are putting lives in danger and leaving future generations with a broken planet.

“The solutions are clear: better energy efficiency and unleashing the world’s abundant renewable power. What’s missing isn’t technology - it’s the political will to act.”
