Welcoming news that Banks Group will not be fighting Newcastle City Council's refusal to grant permission for an opencast mine at Dewley Hill, Friends of the Earth’s north east campaigner, Simon Bowens, said:

“This is great news for both our climate and the local community who fought so hard to stop this mine going ahead.

“Dealing with the climate crisis means consigning coal-mining to the history books, which is why plans for a new mine in Cumbria must also be rejected.

“It’s time to rapidly move away from a fossil fuel-based economy to create the skilled workforce and secure the jobs needed for a healthy and greener future.”

1. Last week the Committee on Climate Change called for planning decisions to be compatible with UK climate targets – a move welcomed by Friends of the Earth.
