Responding to today’s decision by the UK government not to support the building of the  Swansea Bay tidal lagoon, Haf Elgar, director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said:

“The UK government’s decision to pull the plug on its support for the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon is a kick in the teeth for the region - and a massive blow for the development of Wales’ huge renewable energy potential.

“This is a short-sighted move. This scheme is a ground-breaking opportunity to create jobs and harness the power of the second largest tidal range in the world.

“Bold action is needed to tackle climate change – and this means investing in innovative new technologies, such as tidal lagoons.”
