Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland is a grassroots environmental campaigning community. We campaign for change at both a local and national level and are dedicated to the protection of the natural world and the wellbeing of everyone in it.
To help us demand the change needed, we’re asking more people to be part of the conversation. Now more than ever we need you to stand with us. Our newly established Friends of the Future circle is a group of passionate, like-minded donors, committed to protecting people and planet, who will help us take on the challenges that lie ahead.
The climate and ecological breakdowns are urgent threats that are worsening by the day
The effects are being felt closer to people’s lives and it is those who did the least to cause the emergency who are experiencing the most adverse impacts. Every year, floods, heatwaves, and relentless wildfires devastate communities across the world.
However, even with the evidence right in front of them, governments and multinational companies refuse to take the vital action needed. We know there is still hope, but the coming years are critical if we’re to avoid catastrophe.
We cannot delay.
We have the solutions for real change
We’re in a unique position to have an impact
We’re a movement of committed and talented campaigners, lawyers, activists, supporters, trustees, staff and volunteers.
We have over 400,000 supporters who help us pressure the government to act, raise awareness of important issues, and fund campaigns to create a healthier planet for us all. And our incredible grassroots network, made up of nearly 400 community groups, runs campaigns, takes practical action, and works with councils to make a difference at a local level.
We’re also part of an international community, bringing together more than 2 million people in 75 countries. We combine people power all over the world to transform local actions into global impact.
Some of our major successes
Introduction of the Climate Change Act in 2008, which still informs legal decisions today.
Ban on bee-harming pesticides in 2018.
Moratorium on fracking in England in 2019
(and again in 2022).
Opencast coal mine in Druridge Bay refused planning permission in 2020
Suspension of Cambo Oil Field in 2021
Success in our legal challenge over the government’s Net Zero Strategy in 2022
Over the coming years we’ll be campaigning to:
Eradicate fuel poverty and slash emissions by bringing together communities from across our network to pressure the government to insulate our energy-inefficient homes.
Put an end to support for new fossil fuels, both in the UK and abroad, by challenging climate-wrecking fossil fuel projects, and campaigning for a fast and fair transition to renewable energy.
Demand a healthy environment for everyone, no matter where they live, by connecting with those most adversely affected by the climate and environmental crises and amplifying their voices.
Continue the momentum for local climate and environmental action by supporting our grassroots network to campaign for what’s important in their local area.
