Responding to the UK government’s strategy for accelerating the roll out of solar energy, published today by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Mike Childs, head of science, policy and research at Friends of the Earth, said:

"Capturing and utilising energy from the sun is simply common sense when it's the cheapest way to produce the electricity we need for homes, business and, increasingly, transport.

"Greater use of solar panels on roofs and as shelters in car parks will help us meet our climate targets while also strengthening our energy security, but we still need more solar farms. Today's roadmap makes clear only a tiny fraction of land is required for this, and that solar farms can work in harmony with wildlife.

"It's also important that communities living near renewable developments benefit from welcoming them into their areas - it's good to see the government has reaffirmed its commitment to local incentives within its solar strategy."
