Commenting on the Prime Minister's clean power pledge today, Friends of the Earth’s head of policy, Mike Childs, said:

"The government's plans to deliver clean electricity by 2030 are essential to helping bring down harmful emissions, boost energy security and reduce our energy bills.

“But the biggest chunk of household energy bills comes from the exorbitant cost of and our continued reliance on gas for heating and hot water.

“If ministers want to help hard-up households slash bills, they should also introduce a programme to insulate the nation’s heat-leaking homes and make sure electric heat pumps are more affordable.

“The government’s Warm Homes Plan, due to be published in the Spring, must ensure that low-income households are no longer left to shiver in cold homes with all the negative health consequences that brings.”
