Friends of the Earth statement on rioting and violence in Northern Ireland

Press release

Friends of the Earth deeply condemns the senseless and racist violence that's erupted on the streets of Northern Ireland. There is no place for hate and intolerance in our society.

This should be a sobering moment for all of us, not just in Northern Ireland but across the UK. Those stirring division in our communities, whether in the political arena or elsewhere, must be called to answer. But leaders who've failed to quell the rise in racist and xenophobic rhetoric poisoning our public discourse - or worse, those who've enabled it - must also take this as an opportunity for deep reflection.

It's heartening to see the solidarity that communities affected by the violence have been met with - it's this we should hold dear. In the wake of growing tensions, we must stand united with those facing increasing hostility in Northern Ireland and beyond. Because we have far more in common than that which divides us.
