In response to the escalation of far-right violence and intimidation seen across UK towns and cities over the weekend, Jamie Peters, interim director of Friends of the Earth, said:

"We are disgusted by the far-right riots and racism seen in our communities, and appalled that the heartbreaking attack on children in Southport is being used as an excuse for this violence. This is not protest, this is racism and Islamophobia. Those responsible for the violence and perpetuating hatred, hostility and disinformation in our communities and online must be brought to justice.

"Friends of the Earth exists to create a greener, healthier and fairer world for everyone – for today and for future generations. Islamophobia, racism and violence have no place in our society or our diverse movement. We stand with those opposing violence and racism, in support of those targeted, as we work to bring communities together to tackle the interlinked crises we face and build unity against those seeking to divide us."
