Following the Prime Minister’s speech to delegates at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool , Asad Rehman, chief executive of Friends of the Earth, said:

“Talking about renewal will sound hollow to those struggling to make ends meet without the concrete policies that’ll actually lift people out of hardship while restoring our local areas and protecting the planet. There was very little mention of climate and nature in the Prime Minister’s speech and how deeply entwined the environmental crisis is with tackling inequality – and how so many of the solutions are one and the same.

“And while it’s good to see him trying to define Britain by the things we should all be proud of, telling the public that our country isn’t broken doesn’t reflect the way people feel and the lived reality that so many are facing. In times like this we need a clear and compelling message from government that building a greener future will improve all our lives – through cheaper bills, warmer homes, secure clean jobs, thriving green industry and a flourishing environment.”
