Friends of the Earth reacts to new plans for fracking in Lancashire
Commenting on these plans, Estelle Worthington, North West Campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said:
“Local communities will be appalled by Aurora’s plans to frack in the beautiful Lancashire countryside, in an area of high flood risk and near to rural villages and important wildlife sites.
“We are facing a climate emergency. The world’s top climate scientists have warned that we need urgent action to avoid dangerous climate change, and this means rapidly moving away from fossil fuels.
“The UK Parliament has declared a climate emergency and the government has committed to becoming net-zero by 2050. But to have any hope of reaching this target, we need to get serious about ending our reliance on fossil-fuels. Backing the exploration of new hydrocarbon sources at this time would be entirely irresponsible.
“Councillors and government ministers must listen to the health and environmental concerns of local residents, and to climate experts, and refuse plans for fracking.”
