Press release
It’s a ‘mark your own homework’ industry, says Friends of the Earth

Responding to today’s report by the National Audit Office (NAO) on fracking for shale gas in England, Jamie Peters, fracking campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:

“This is a quietly critical report that doesn’t give the fracking industry any revived sense of hope. The NAO have several concerns including the mark-your-own-homework approach to regulation and the lack of clarity over who should be responsible for clean-up costs if fracking ever got going.

“Nothing has changed: fracking isn’t wanted, it’s a failed industry, and the future is renewables and energy saving.”

Notes to editors:

1. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking as it’s commonly known, is the controversial process of pumping a high-pressure mixture of chemicals and water into shale rock, ‘fracturing’ it to release gas.
