Responding to the news that the government has announced an independent review into the water industry, Paul de Zylva, senior sustainability analyst at Friends of the Earth, said:

"Although water firms are largely responsible for the sewage scandal after decades of failing to invest in essential infrastructure improvements, pollution from farms, buildings and roads is also harming our rivers, streams, lakes and seas.

"The government's review must address all of the reasons for our waters being in such a poor state, including lax regulation. If this review ducks these issues, the condition of our waterways will continue to deteriorate, and the government will continue to be off course with its own legally binding targets to restore the UK's depleted nature."
