Friends of the Earth plastics campaigner Julian Kirby said:

Action on straws, cotton buds and stirrers is crucial to turn the tide of plastic pollution, so government plans to ban these items are a necessary and welcome step forward.

“But these are only a small fraction of the plastics polluting our environment. Ministers, manufacturers and retailers must address the many other forms of plastic that harm our dolphins, turtles and other wildlife too.

“Eliminating single-use plastic is vital - but the only long-term solution is a complete phase-out of all but the most essential plastics. The government must take the lead by drawing up an action plan to make this a reality.”
