West Cumbria Mining Ltd want to build a new coalmine just south of Whitehaven. The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP (the "SoS") granted planning permission for this mine on 7 December 2022.
Friends of the Earth and South Lakes Action on Climate Change have both filed cases against the SoS to challenge this decision, as we believe it was unlawful as the SoS did not properly consider the climate impacts of this mine.
