Episode 7: Is Heathrow getting a third runway?

    |     13.62 MB (MP3 file)
Our special bonus episode comes hot on the heels of Friends of the Earth's historic win in the Court of Appeal. On Thursday 27 February, government plans to expand Heathrow airport were ruled illegal, on the grounds that they did not full consider the climate impacts of the project.

But what happens now, and what does this ruling mean for holding the government to account on their promises to take climate action?

Muna and Louisa chat through some of the wider implications with Friends of the Earth lawyer, Katie de Kauwe, who has been working on the case.

Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth

We’re a diverse, enthusiastic team, and welcome anyone who’d like to join our group and put positive energy into campaigning for a better world. The group has run continuously since 1981 with many successful campaigns behind us, for example doorstep paper recycling using a milk float - well before the government dreamt of such a thing! The most pressing issue in 2019 is the climate emergency but we also campaign on other issues, listed below.

After a long and uncertain campaign, 2019 finally became the year the fracking industry fell. It's been a big win for local campaigning, and the environmental movement as a whole.

But why, and how?

Muna talks to Friends of the Earth's lead fracking campaigner, Jamie, and our web guru Fran about why fracking is bad for the climate, how the win happened (and how it was celebrated!), and why activism of all forms is needed to save the planet.

In recent years there's been a dramatic increase in the use of "persons unknown" injunctions by private companies and public authorities, which have targeted both the Gypsy and Traveller community and environmental protestors. They've been used by fossil fuel companies against community-based anti-fracking campaigns and across the whole of the HS2 route.

On 8 and 9 February 2023 Friends of the Earth supported an appeal brought by 3 Gypsy and Traveller charities at the Supreme Court. Read the briefing from the case.
