Learn why we can’t fix climate change without fixing gender equality, and hear from some of the key women leading the charge for both, in the 2nd edition of the powerful book Why women will save the planet, released in time for International Women’s Day (8 March).

The book is a unique collaboration between Friends of the Earth and C40 Cities showcasing pioneering city mayors, key voices in the environmental and feminist movements, and academics. The essays collectively demonstrate both the need for women’s empowerment for climate action and the powerful change it can bring. A rallying call – for the planet, for women, for everyone.

The book includes new chapters from:

  • Christiana Figueres - Architect of the Paris agreement
  • Patricia Espinosa – UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
  • Alexandra Palt – Chief corporate responsibility officer, L'Oréal
  • Anne Hidalgo -  Mayor of Paris
  • Zandile Gumede - Mayor of Durban, South Africa

Along with chapters from Jude Kelly, founder of Women of the World Festival at London’s Southbank Centre, Vandana Shiva, environmental author and activist, and Juliet Davenport, CEO of Good Energy.

Liz Hutchins, Friends of the Earth Campaigns Director, said:

“Why women will save the planet is an inspiring call to action for environmental activists everywhere. It shows that in order to build a more sustainable world, we must also build a more equal one.

“In 2018, as we celebrate those who fought for a woman’s right to vote, this book captures some of the spirit of the great women who came before us and shows that with hope, passion and perseverance, together we can build a better world.”

Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris & Chair of C40 said:

"We know that women will shape the future. In order to build the most sustainable, liveable, equal and economically cities of the future, we need more and more women to lead. Every contributor to this book is already a powerful leader in their field, and they are committed to empower the unstoppable movement of women climate heroes in cities around the world. The 21st century is the century of women and we want you to shape the future with us.”
